Therapy Dog on the job!

Calley is volunteering this week @ Mercy Nursing Fair!

Interesting Story of Calley this past week:  Calley's cousin, (a bulldog - half her height but almost equal in weight) made a visit to our house for the 1st time on Monday.  Hoover (named b/c of his ability to vacuum up his food!) was a rescued this past year from a puppy mill of sorts.  He entered the house in what appeared a calm manner.  He decided his first job here was to scare the dickens out of EDRC the cat - successfully clearing him from the area!

Hoover's next goal apparently was to trap Calley into hallway - and then affix his wide mouth including teeth to her side!  It seemed to take me an eternity to get Hoover to release Calley from his grip (probably though 90 seconds).  Calley stood with Hoover attached to her side just looking at him with an expression that appeared to communicate - 'just exactly what are you doing?'  She never barked - growled - pulled away - appeared upset - just stood there patiently until Hoover decided to let go of her side.

Now that is some training at work - I took Calley to the kitchen sink to wipe her down.  There was no blood - however Bulldogs have significant slobber and over half her side was soaked from Hoover's drool.

Fortunately, Calley was only bruised and there was no break in the skin what-so-ever!!!  Thank God.  I thought for sure we would be visiting the vet shortly but b/c of her calmness throughout the event she sustained minimal damage from her new cousin Hoover -  who she will not be visited by again!  Yea Calley and all the training you have had to undergo!

Clearly Hoover was a abused purebred dog - who lived in a cage for at least 3+ years - and unfortunately although wonderful with humans is apparently dog and cat aggressive as a result of his unfortunate past.

Calley (not a purebred canine - but definitely a pointer mix) was adopted from the Humane Society - her history includes running the streets of greater St. Louis!
