Yoga Psychology

“The ancient science of yoga is a philosophy and practical psychology. It describes a clear and certain path to a focused mind, and provides effective practices to walk that path.” A.G. Mohan

We can find peace of mind by examining and changing patterns of thoughts to move from a distracted mind to a focused mind. Yoga Psychology along with yoga therapy offers a systematic approach to all aspects of health.

A philosophy session with Caroline introduces you to incorporating the yoga sutras of Patanjali; regarding the 8 limbs of yoga, and other means to balance out the kleshas (mental afflictions) in our lives.

“Yoga is the process of changing a wandering mind into a centered one, a waning mind into a contented one, a self-indulging mind into a self-fulfilling one.” A.G. Mohan, 1993

With a disorder such as anorexia or depression we examine not only the mind, but:
  • Individual lifestyle & Personality - habits, society, living environment
  • Physical health – body, breath, food, behavior of senses
  • Chanting might also can improve your mood

Healing with Chants:

Sound impacts our system. Imagine listening to ocean waves in comparison to heavy metal rock music. They provide different physical & mental reactions. And in making our own sound, we impact ourselves internally as well as others. Again, imagine humming a lullaby in comparison to yelling in anger. Both provide different reactions in us as well as others.

Sound is a powerful tool with language, so that we can communicate. There is meaning behind our words which give us a plethora of different experiences from reading a beautiful verse to hearing news of a death in the family.

Thus, the intention is important – There are specific peace chants, but many chants have practical applications for removing obstacles, fears, and anxieties.

Having the intention with sound deepens our experience & provides a mental strength to continue on our journey towards contentment.

Yoga & Eating Disorders

The fixation with body image distracts us from greater endeavors. Let us stop pre-occupying our time with wars against our bodies and come into our "Selves."

The body is a form of the "Self." With age, injury, and disease, the form changes but there is a singular presence that continues. Thus, the body is a vehicle for transformation.

Yoga opens us up by using the body in postures that link it to both the breath and mind, bringing our attention to internal sensations of the body, rather than its outside appearance. By changing this focus, we change the context for ex
periencing the body and the outside world.

The Impact of the Economy on the Treatment of Eating Disorders

shamedgirl.jpgThere are few people who have been unaffected by the country’s ongoing economic troubles. As a result, many have had to tighten budgets, cut costs and do without the comforts and luxuries to which they’ve become accustomed. But what happens when the purse strings get tightened and treatment for an eating disorder gets labeled a “non-essential”?

Unfortunately, its happening more and more as people try to save money wherever they can, but postponing much-needed treatment in an attempt to save money should not be a choice that people are forced to make. Eating Disorders are serious illnesses, and, without treatment, they can have long-term and sometimes fatal consequences. Even in normal circumstances, it can take an individual a long time, and a lot of urging from their loved ones, to seek treatment for an eating disorder. With the current economic crisis forcing everyone to pinch pennies, it can be even more tempting for individuals (and families) to forego much-needed treatment because they don’t think they can afford it.

At The Eating Disorders Recovery Center, we understand that the recent economic climate makes it difficult for individuals to prioritize their treatment and recovery. We also know that stressful life events, including financial hardships, can exacerbate an existing eating disorder, making it even more critical to have support and treatment in place during difficult times like these.

It’s important to remember that recovery from an eating disorder does not have to take a back seat to paying the mortgage and the utility bills. There are options available for support and treatment that won’t break the bank. Additionally, all levels of treatment at The Eating Disorder Recovery Center, including the most intensive level of outpatient care, are eligible to be covered by most major insurance carriers.

Eating Disorders are severe illnesses that require the same care and attention one would give to any other medical ailment or disease. If you or a loved one have been delaying treatment for financial reasons, call the Eating Disorder Recovery Center (636.225.3700) to speak with an Admissions Coordinator about affordable treatment options.

Eating Disorder 101 & MORE

Well today's the day...let's blog! I welcome any comments, questions, thoughts that any of you may have regarding Eating Disorders and the recovery process (Including everything in-between). All of us at addictions.net look forward to what the future will bring!

Next week we begin posting our Podcasts on the site as well. If there is anything you would like to hear about in more detail than addictions.net already has by all means let us know. Our podcasts will be linked up to google and to itunes as well. It is very exciting for us here to move forward from where we came!

How about a little about me. Well, where to start...I have been dedicated (for all of my 2nd career to the treatment and recovery process of eating disorders. (My first career was that of a teacher for about 6 years of lil' 1st graders!) I enjoy thoroughly working with clients suffering from these serious and deadly disorders.

All I can tell you is that the people I have worked with over the past 27+ years are some of the most intelligent, gifted and special people I have met. I absolutely love watching them choose to recover and truly blossom! As Dr. Seuss might say 'Oh the places you go!' I thank all of you for the honor of joining your journey!

I have enjoyed learning about these devastating illnesses and have felt the need to attempt to help others learn and recover. The most surprising things I have learned came from the History of Eating Disorders....Not new disorders!

The saddest thing I've learned over the years is the impact the media/advertizing has on individual's self-esteem...Ugh so sad! Gosh & 'Barbie' who I played with as a child myself - the message she brings is sooooo sad. 'Barbie with Anorexia'

Well you all have a wonderful time till we meet again.

Just me - Deb - Oh and please let me know your thoughts and ideas for our new

'Never Walk Alone' Support...
